What Role Might Migration Play in Germany in 2050?

❗️Update: Registration through the Futurium website is now closed. We are still looking for participants aged 15–21 to join the discussion. If you are within this age group, or if you are a teacher, educator, or youth worker interested in bringing young people to the event, please contact us by email at team@migrationmatters.me

How will migration shape Germany over the next 25 years?

While public and political debates about migration often focus on immediate challenges, migration will continue to shape societies around the world for decades to come. Looking ahead can help us better understand the choices, opportunities, and challenges that may influence our collective future.

On June 26, 2026, Migration Matters, together with the DeZIM Institute and Futurium, will host an intergenerational fishbowl discussion exploring possible futures of migration in Germany. The event is part of the international research project Future Imaginaries of Migration, which brings together researchers, practitioners, artists, and members of the public to imagine how migration may evolve in the years ahead.

Imagining Migration Futures Across Generations

What makes this event unique is its intergenerational format. We are bringing together young people aged 16–19 and adults aged 60+ to exchange perspectives and develop future visions for Germany in 2050.

Young people today are growing up in a highly interconnected world shaped by digital technologies, international mobility, and global networks. Older generations have experienced very different social, political, and technological realities throughout their lives. By bringing these perspectives together, we hope to create a space for meaningful dialogue about migration, mobility, belonging, and social change.

Together with migration researchers and artists, participants will explore questions such as:

  • What role might migration play in Germany in 2050?
  • How mobile will we be in 25 years?
  • Who will be able—or need—to move?
  • What kinds of borders might exist in the future?
  • How might migration continue to shape our societies?
