Mo Hamza

Mo Hamza

Dr. Mo Hamza is Professor of Risk Management and Societal Safety at Lund University, Sweden. He is also an affiliate professor at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) and the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). Hamza’s work focuses on climate change and environmental displacement, and refugee mobility and rights. He is currently leading a project on refugee decision making in movement from first asylum countries and a project on youth migration in Ethiopia due to climate change and conflict. He was the lead author and editor of the 2015 World Disasters Report.

Nassim Majidi

Nassim Majidi

Dr. Nassim Majidi is the co-founder and executive director of Samuel Hall, specializing in durable solutions to displacement. Since 2007, she has led research on migration across Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Somalia, and the Horn of Africa. Based in Nairobi, Majidi works on climate change and displacement with the Hugo Observatory at the University of Liège and leads a study on gender, climate, and mobility with UNDP’s Resilience Hub, with a feminist coalition building exercise to be launched at COP29. Nassim holds a PhD from Sciences Po Paris, and a MA in International Affairs and Development Studies from Cornell University.

Maryam: We used to live in a remote area of the Sherzad District in Afghanistan, and we were farmers and raised livestock. Our living conditions were good. We had a lot of cows and sheep. But drought hit our community. We didn’t get any rain for an entire year. The excessive heat damaged our farms, so we had to move away from there.
